Social Issue Project Proposal

What social issue do you plan to build an advertising campaign around?
    -Stereotypes

What is your personal reason for choosing this issue?
-I have been stereotyped multiple times for being blonde and going to church.

Why should people be concerned about the issue?
-Stereotypes are not who people really are.

How can you motivate people to care about this cause?
-Make images of people dressed or acting as their common stereotype versus who they really are.

Research nonprofit organizations that are associated with the cause
-include facts, figures, or statistics that could be used in your ads

Social Issue Advertisement Examples

Technical- I like the way these photos were shot because it gets the point across right away, that it is not hard to help feed the homeless.
Conceptual- I support this social issue because not everyone knows when their next meal will be.
Creative- This is a different approach to this issue, rather than photographing the homeless, they showed people how easy it is to help feed the homeless.

Technical- The way this was shot and edited is very unique. Most people would photograph just animals that are going extinct, rather than editing.
Conceptual- I support this issue because it is our (humans) fault that so many animals are going extinct.
Creative- This is a very unique way to show that every minute a species is going extinct.

Technical- The way this was shot was simple, yet it gets the point across that liking something on Facebook is not doing anything.
Conceptual- I support this because people constantly like things on Facebook, yet will not volunteer to help the cause
Creative- This was creative in the way that they had a punch of different hands in the picture.

Photojournalism - NEED FOR SPEED

Coming down the front stretch, eight 358 cars get ready to start their heat race at Susquehanna.
Need for Speed
By Emily Hench
Racing for a cause, Leiby races in honor of everyone who is battling
or has lost their battle with breast cancer.

Chandler Leiby (119) is a second generation
358 sprint car driver from Carlisle, PA.
The last race of the 2014 season for Central PA Sprint Car drivers was held on November 15 at Susquehanna Speedway Park in York Haven, PA. Events started as early as 1:15pm with the push-off truck meeting. The sprint car drivers’ meeting was at 1:45pm, and the warm-ups and 410 time trials shortly after. Two new track records were set by two different 410 drivers.

Chandler Leiby, age 17, is the driver of the 119 sprint car. He is a second generation driver, taking after his father, who also raced the 119 car. Leiby is from Carlisle, PA and racing has always been a huge part of their family. The 2014 season was the second season that Leiby raced a 358 sprint car. He is hoping to race a 410 in the very near future. Leiby races to raise awareness of breast cancer, diabetes, and autism.

Drifting through turns 1 and 2, Leiby quickly
takes the lead during one of the 358 heats.

The 358 heats followed with 119’s driver, Chandler Leiby, starting in 5th place. Leiby quickly moved up to 1st place before turns 1 and 2 of the first lap. The placings then changed in turns 3 and 4. Leiby stated, “Another driver cut me off and I was lit.” Leiby’s 119 car finished in 3rd place in the heat race, however, Leiby said, “The car wasn’t the best for the heat...[the car] was too loose the whole night.”

During the feature, Leiby passes another driver in turns 1 and 2.

After a long wait, Leiby made an appearance in the 358 feature, starting in 7th place. He fought for a higher place the whole race and finished in 6th place out of 21 cars. The majority of the people Leiby races against are at least 15-20 years older than him. When asked if he was pleased with the results of the last race of 2014, Leiby replied, “It wasn’t the best outcome, but I was happy to bring it home in one piece.”

Thanks to all of his sponsors and pit crew,
Leiby ended as the Susquehanna Speedway track champion for 2014.
All of Leiby's sponsors and everyone on his pit crew made the track championship possible at Susquehanna Speedway. His sponsors include Leiby Seal Coating and Line Painting, Matco Tools, Filson Water, Frank's Tire & Auto, Mach 1 Chassis, Lawrence Chevrolet, Fastener Specialties, B&G Storage, Butler Built, Fisher Auto Parts, Russ's Auto & Trailer Sales, Integrity Hearing Aid Solutions, and Shippensburg University. His pit crew includes Ole Greg, Pyscho, Smackpappy, Lightning Larry, Stinky Steve and Krazy Kooter.

Photojournalism Assignment

I really liked shooting at the races because it's something different than most people are used to seeing. An article along with pictures could be interesting for people who never go to the races. It was fun to shoot, but it was also very cold and it wasn't the easiest to get into the infield!

Photojournalism PennLive

Freed of criminal charges, Cumberland County woman still fighting to recover 40-plus animals seized by Humane Society by Matt Miller http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2014/11/freed_of_criminal_charges_cumb.html#incart_m-rpt-1

-The article was about a woman, who lives in Cumberland County, that is trying to get her animals back that were seized from her in January 2014. All of the criminal charges were dropped by the district judge, and she is suing the Humane Society of Harrisburg.
-I didn't like that the photo is plain and simple, especially because there is only one picture on the article. I liked the article because it told me everything about the event and situation, past, present and future.

Photojournalism Project Proposal

I'm planning on going to the sprint car races at William's Grove on November 15. My friend races and I enjoy being at the races, even if it's freezing cold! I've only been to about 5 races and I've learned a lot about it. Most people won't understand it until someone explains to them or they go to the races, so I think it will be interesting and different to use as a project.

Portraiture Final

My model was my sister, Kara. She's always a happy, fun person to be around, but she knows when to be serious. I showcased this by having her smile in most pictures. I also had her do a couple of serious shots.

I liked this project, but I can't say I loved it. I liked being able to move the model, unlike with sports or action. I don't like when the model comes with no ideas of what they want, I shouldn't have to take them everywhere, in case I take them to a spot they don't like or I skip over a place that they end up liking.

I showed my sister the final photos and she was pleased with them. I posted them on Facebook and a lot of people commented that they liked them.

I would advise them to know stuff about their model and places they like. Show them the pose you want them to do, but also let them choose some.

The most challenging aspect of this project was deciding where to take her to take the photos. I didn't want to choose a location that clashed with her or her outfits. I think I did well with showcasing her personality as a fun, yet serious person.

Elaine Gates Recap

I learned that you should move around your subjects when they're in one spot. You don't even have to make them move whenever you move to a different angle. I also learned that January through March are not good business months.

HDR shooting assignment final

Asymmetrical Balance
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1/4
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1/14
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1
I chose to make an HDR picture of my pond because of the sunset's colors and my family has a lot of memories fishing and canoeing in it.

Framing
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1/4
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1/14

ISO 400, f/22, ss 1/14
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1

ISO 400, f/22, ss 1/4
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1/14
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1

ISO 400, f/22, ss 1/4

ISO 400, f/22, ss 1

Symmetrical Balance
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1/4
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1/14
ISO 400, f/22, ss 1
I made an HDR picture of my house's old dinner bell because it shows how old my house is and I like the sunset's colors in the background.

·      What are your thoughts on HDR & the visuals they produce? I like HDR because it gives pictures more detail and makes some pictures look fake if you edit it that way.
·      Do your images tell a story or are they just a collection of images? My images tell a story because they are all pictures on or around my property.
How has your relationship to making images changed in thinking about what you photograph? I like HDR, but I would still rather photograph sports and motion.
·      How did light affect/change your photograph? Light played a big part in my pictures because it gave it a more interesting background.

Sketchbook cover
My quote is "Live the life you love and love the life you live." I chose this because you should always live, love and laugh.
I chose all of the horse pictures because I'm around them almost all the time.
I chose the picture of my dog in the water because it's one of my favorite pictures and shows her personality.
I chose the pictures of the rings because I like taking pictures of rings.
6.20.15 is also the day that my sister and her fiance are getting married.
I'm usually known because of riding and having horses.
I really like the finished piece because the left half is somewhat organized while the other half isn't (like my life basically).

Summer Project

This is my favorite picture from this summer because it shows a lot of my dog's personality. It's also very detailed in such a simple picture. It shows how she is aging (the grey on her nose), yet she is still living life to the fullest.
