Photojournalism Project Proposal

I'm planning on going to the sprint car races at William's Grove on November 15. My friend races and I enjoy being at the races, even if it's freezing cold! I've only been to about 5 races and I've learned a lot about it. Most people won't understand it until someone explains to them or they go to the races, so I think it will be interesting and different to use as a project.

Portraiture Final

My model was my sister, Kara. She's always a happy, fun person to be around, but she knows when to be serious. I showcased this by having her smile in most pictures. I also had her do a couple of serious shots.

I liked this project, but I can't say I loved it. I liked being able to move the model, unlike with sports or action. I don't like when the model comes with no ideas of what they want, I shouldn't have to take them everywhere, in case I take them to a spot they don't like or I skip over a place that they end up liking.

I showed my sister the final photos and she was pleased with them. I posted them on Facebook and a lot of people commented that they liked them.

I would advise them to know stuff about their model and places they like. Show them the pose you want them to do, but also let them choose some.

The most challenging aspect of this project was deciding where to take her to take the photos. I didn't want to choose a location that clashed with her or her outfits. I think I did well with showcasing her personality as a fun, yet serious person.

Senior Portrait Notes

-natural look for parents
-high fashion for seniors
-let them bring their own outfits, but make sure they bring an outfit for a studio photo
-seniors want edgy, editorial, personal photos

10 Portraiture Examples

Bill Hench
Serious
I like this photo because it's abstract and very different than a lot of senior pictures.

Bill Hench
Smile
I like this picture because it's simple and it shows what the girl is into.
Bill Hench
Serious
I like this photo because the colors work well together and the corn makes leading lines.

Colleen & Co
Serious
I like this photo because it's different but it's also somewhat simple.

Bill Hench
Candid
I like this photo because the horse and the girl are both looking at the same place.
I don't like that the gate is in the photo.

Bill Hench
Serious
I like this photo (and the next) because they are different than others and have an interesting overlay.

Camera Box
Serious
I like this photo because it shows what the person does with their time.
I don't like the vignette.

Camera Box
Candid
I like this photo because of her hair being the only thing that's colored.
Again, I don't like the vignette.

Camera Box
Smile
I like this photo because it's simple, but it's also colorful at the same time.

Elaine Gates Recap

I learned that you should move around your subjects when they're in one spot. You don't even have to make them move whenever you move to a different angle. I also learned that January through March are not good business months.
